New Chief Development Officer Hired
August 1st, 2019
This month JPCatholic welcomes a new addition to its administrative staff as Mr. Steven Wise steps into the newly-created role of Chief Development Officer. Coming in with over a decade’s experience in fundraising for Catholic nonprofits, as Chief Development Officer Mr. Wise will be charged with raising capital in particular for scholarship funds and facilities expansion, such as construction of the chapel and renovating the empty academic building at 131 S. Broadway. “We’re expanding and we need the space - students are pushing for the chapel, faculty are pushing for more academic space, so we were blessed to get someone as senior as Steve to apply for this position,” says University president Dr. Derry Connolly.
Holding an MBA from UCLA, Mr. Wise spent the majority of his career working in Silicon Valley for companies such as Apple and Hewlett Packard, among others, but in 2006 found himself drawn to work for the Catholic apostolate of Immaculate Heart Radio in Sacramento. In 2008, in the wake of the Great Recession, he began to focus specifically on fundraising for the network. Then when it was acquired by Relevant Radio in 2017 he was tasked with overseeing its transition, taking on the title of Senior Regional Director West Coast for the post-merger network. Once that transition was completed, Mr. Wise felt that he had “really completed my mission for Relevant Radio.”
As he was already familiar with Dr. Connolly and JPCatholic, when the school opened its search for a Chief Development Officer the position struck him as a natural next step. “I just had a sense that the Holy Spirit said, ‘check this out,’” he explains.
Mr. Wise sees his role at the University as that of helping it reach a new level of effectiveness, and he will use the school’s unique value proposition to target like-minded individuals who would consider investing in its success. “The University has been in operation long enough to have real, tangible, compelling results, and my job is to help investors see that opportunity,” he says. “I’m not out to raise money. I’m out to find investors who will understand what we do and will support it. We need a renaissance in our Church where the arts [are] leading the way instead of being an afterthought, and John Paul the Great Catholic University is unique in the area of the arts.”
