Lecture details:

Join us for a special lecture from JPCatholic founding president Dr. Derry Connolly.

Veritatis Splendor (The Splendor of the Truth) is possibly the finest and most profound encyclical of Pope St. John Paul the Great. Promulgated 30-years ago in August 1993, it deals comprehensively with fundamental questions regarding Catholic moral teaching and its bedrock principles from Sacred Scripture and the living Apostolic Tradition.

Within our contemporary cultural context, JPII addresses the challenges of objective truth vs relativism, human dignity vs injustice, and the totalitarianism that arises out of a denial of objective truth. His encyclical focuses on the encounter with Jesus, the Way, and the Truth, and the Life (Jn 14:6), and our call to salvation through faith in Jesus. It explores true love and authentic freedom and their relationship to our total obedience to the will of God.

Veritatis Splendor consists of three chapters:

  • Teacher, What Good Must I Do…?
  • Do Not Be Conformed to This World
  • Lest the Cross of Christ Be Emptied of Its Power

While we will cover the highlights of Chapters I and II, we will focus heavily on the pastoral Chapter III, delving into the text.
