Residential Life

JPCatholic students live in townhome and apartment units at Latitude 33 Apartment Community, about a 0.6 mile walk from our campus in downtown Escondido. Each unit comes furnished with fundamental furniture and kitchenware, as well as appliances like a washer and dryer. This unique set up provides students with more living space than a typical dorm room, and also helps develop important life skills before graduation.

In addition to the student apartments and townhomes, JPCatholic leases a unit (called “The Chesterton”) that is used as a common area for students. This apartment provides students with additional places to watch movies, cook, socialize, or study together.

Floorplans

In general, five students live in a unit, split between two bedrooms (the “Double” room and the “Triple” room). Below are some sample floor plans that JPCatholic leases. Click image to enlarge.

Student Q&A: Apartment Life at JPCatholic

Frequently Asked Questions

While it is a more independent style of living than a dorm, JPCatholic’s housing model still offers support and supervision from the Student Life staff and the student Campus Life Team. Each unit belongs to a “Section”, and a student from the Campus Life Team serves as the Section Leader (similar to an “RA”, Resident Assistant). Their role is to provide support and mentorship especially to new students, help enforce university policies, offer the first level of conflict moderation among roommates, and foster community among their Section.

In addition, members of Student Life Staff either live on campus at Latitude 33, or spend office hours in the evening at the common areas in order to be more accessible to students outside of business hours.

Students are responsible for maintaining a clean apartment, and regular room checks are conducted throughout the year.

No, JPCatholic does not provide a meal plan, and students do their own grocery shopping and cooking. Each unit at Latitude comes equipped with a spacious kitchen, and there are many grocery stores conveniently located within a 5-minute drive. Two grocery stores (Smart & Final, Northgate Market) are located within easy walking distance.

Yes. JPCatholic leases many units at Latitude, but other residents live in the community as well. Many of our leased units are adjacent to one another.

JPCatholic’s policy limits intervisitation to certain circumstances that require pre-approval from the Student Life team. See Student Handbook for more details.

Possession or consumption of alcohol is prohibited on campus, including within the Latitude 33 complex, with some exceptions for those 21 years and older (in specific areas and during specific times). See Student Handbook for more details. See also JPCatholic’s Drug & Alcohol Policy.

After enrolling, students will be sent a Housing Registration form which includes a Roommate Questionnaire. Students have the chance to specifically request each other as roommates (e.g. if they met already at a University Day, or in the private Facebook group for accepted students). Otherwise the Student Life staff will use their Roommate Questionnaire to assign them suitable roommates. Roommate requests and preferences are not guaranteed. The sooner you finish the Housing Registration process, the higher priority your preferences will receive.

Leases (and room/roommate assignments) typically last for one calendar year, resetting during the September break. First-year students normally live in an apartment floorplan, with the potential opportunity to move to a townhome floorplan starting in their second year. Every spring, current students submit their housing preferences for the coming fall.

Possibly. If space permits, you may be able to request a Single room. See next question for details on cost.

No, JPCatholic charges the same amount for apartment and townhome style units. However, there is a cost difference depending what type of bedroom option you select:

  • Triple: Three students in the bedroom
  • Double: Two students in the bedroom
  • Single: One student in the bedroom
See Housing Costs

Apartment Utilities and Wi-Fi are provided for students by JPCatholic.

For the Winter, Spring, and Summer breaks, students are invited to stay on campus if they wish.

For the Fall Break in September, students are required to move out of their unit, with all of their belongings. Various storage solutions exist for students to store their items over the break.

Most students walk (about 10 minutes), but some also bike, skateboard, or drive.

See Parking Policy

Yes - however, parking is prioritized for upperclassmen and may be limited for freshmen. Among freshmen, priority is given on a first-come, first-serve basis.

If you wish to bring a vehicle on campus, you must apply for a Latitude 33 parking spot using the Car Application Form (sent to you after you enroll).

Students who don’t have a car on campus are usually able to find rides with other students, whether to explore San Diego, go shopping, or get to the airport. Students normally walk, bike, or skateboard between campus and student housing. San Diego also has great public transportation options available. See Public Transportation

Residential students who bring a car will be assigned a specific parking spot within Latitude 33, either in a townhome garage or in the parking garage located beneath the apartment building.

JPCatholic leases an apartment (called The Chesterton) and a townhome (called The Perch) to use as common areas exclusively for JPCatholic students; no students live there. This space provide a place to watch movies, cook, socialize, or study together. It is open during specific hours of the week when a student member of the Campus Life Team is on duty. These hours may vary from quarter to quarter. See Current Hours
